Prepare for your Adventure

General Program Information

The WVU Outdoor Education Center provides a variety of programs that are guided throughout the WVU Research Forest, Cooper's Rock State Forest and Cheat Lake. Go to your program area below to learn more about your activity area, directions to the location, and what to expect when you arrive.

To help prepare for your experience at the Outdoor Education Center, we’ve put together a communication plan and to-do list of items to take care of in the time leading up to your event date.
  • Put your adventure day on your calendar with the date and time!
  • Check your inbox for a confirmation email from us (check your junk mail too!). If you haven't received one, feel free to contact us to confirm your reservation.  Also, if you need to make any changes to your reservation time or date, contact our office as soon as possible.  
  • Make sure all individuals in your group have completed participant paperwork. Remember, any individuals under the age of 18 will need a parent/guardian signature. (WVU Outdoor Education Center Participant Packet)
  • Check the weather and make sure you and your group members are well prepared for your adventure.
  • Plan accordingly for your travel time to the OEC and be sure you have your directions. The OEC is 30 minutes from Morgantown.
Bonus Tip:  If you have any questions, need further information, or just want to tell us how excited you are about your adventure day, give us a call or email and we'll be happy to help!
Make sure you're ready for your adventure!  Here's a general pack list that we recommend:
Required:
  • Close-toed shoes, suitable for athelitcs and outdoor activities
  • Fact-acting medications (if applicable, e.g. inhalers, glucose tabs, etc.)
  • Clothes appropriate for being active and outdoors. Dress for the weather.
  • All participant paperwork (WVU Outdoor Education Center Participant Packets)
Recommended:
  • Layers - weather can flucuate considerably at the OEC
  • Rain Gear
  • Water Bottle
  • Snacks/Meal
  • Sunglasses and Hat
  • Sunscreen
DO NOT BRING:
*Please note that the OEC does not provide food or meals. However, food storage areas can be provided and we are happy to work with you in coordinating dining space and meal time during your activity.
  • Adventure WV and the WVU Outdoor Education Center operate in a wide variety of weather conditions. Programs will operate during cold, windy, rainy and hot conditions. It is very important participants come prepared with additional layers, closed toe shoes and sun protection.

  • Dangerous weather during the scheduled program may result in programs being delayed or cancelled. Dangerous weather includes electrical storms, extreme temps, high winds, etc. This will be determined by your facilitator or guide. A Program Manager will give a courtesy call to your contact person if your program needs to be rescheduled

For the most up to date and accurate weather follow the Coopers Rock Weather Station on Weather Underground.

  • If you need to make changes to your reservation, please contact the Adventure WV and WVU Outdoor Education Center offices as soon as possible – 304.293.5221 ext. 3 or 4.

  • Cancellations made less than 5 business days prior to the program date are subject to a cancellation fee. This fee will reflect up to 25% of the program agreement fee and is determined by the Program Manager. Normal business days are Monday-Friday, 8AM-6PM.
    • Cancellations made by the Organization and/or the Program Contact within 48 hours of the established program date are subject to pay the entire portion of the program agreement. This fee is determined by the Program Manager.
    • Cancellations due to weather or other extenuating circumstances (as determined by the Program Manager) may reschedule or be issued a refund.

Map & Directions to the OEC
  • The Canopy Tour and Challenge Course facilities are part of the Outdoor Education Center which is located in the University Research Forest. Please park near the gravel trail to the right of the WestVaco Conference Building. No parking pass or validation is needed.
  • An Adventure WV staff member will meet you in the parking lot. Please remain in the parking lot area until our staff arrives to greet you.
  • As needed, time will be provided to review/complete paperwork and use the bathroom before your adventure begins. 
  • Once paperwork has been complete and reviewed, an Adventure WV staff person will guide participants to the WVU Outdoor Education Center. This is a short hike from the parking area.
  • Trained guides and facilitators will conduct an orientation prior to any adventure. This is the perfect time to ask questions and ensure you understand the activity entirely. All gear is provided and no prior experience is necessary.
  • LATE ARRIVAL:  If you arrive late for your adventure, follow the trail from the parking lot up to the Outdoor Education Center and locate the Program Manager. You may also contact the WVU Outdoor Education Center phone: 304.680.ZIPP (9477)

Rock Climbing in Cooper's Rock State Forest

  • From Morgantown, WV, take I-68 East to Exit 15 (Coopers Rock Road). At top of exit ramp make a right and follow road into Coopers Rock State Forest.
    • Continue down for approximately 4 miles to a large parking area known as the “climber’s lot.” This parking lot is the large overflow parking prior to the concession stand at the forest. There you will see an Adventure WV or WVU pop-up tent and our friendly climbing staff waiting there to meet you.
  • From Cumberland, MD, take I-68 West to Exit 15 (Coopers Rock Road). At top of exit ramp make a left, go over I-68 bridge and follow road into Coopers Rock State Forest.
    • Continue down for approximately 4 miles to a large parking area known as the “climber’s lot.” This parking lot is the large overflow parking prior to the concession stand at the forest. There you will see an Adventure WV or WVU pop-up tent and our friendly climbing staff waiting there to meet you.
  • All participants may park in the large overflow parking area. Look for the large Adventure WV or WVU pop-up tent upon your arrival. No parking pass or validation is needed.
  • An Adventure WV staff member may be present to great you. You may also go directly to the Adventure WV or WVU pop-up tent.
  • Time will be provided to review/complete paperwork and use the bathroom before programming begins.
  • Once paperwork has been complete and reviewed, an Adventure WV staff person will guide participants to the designated climbing site.
  • Once the short hike has concluded, trained guides and facilitators will conduct an orientation prior to your adventure. This is the perfect time to ask questions and ensure you understand the activity entirely. All gear is provided and no prior experience is necessary.

Climbing

  • From Morgantown, WV, take I-68 East to Exit 15 (Coopers Rock Road). At top of exit ramp make a right and follow road into Coopers Rock State Forest.

This is the gift and snack stand just at the end of the parking lot. Additional parking is available in the overflow lot just prior to this concession stand. An Adventure WV representative will be stationed here to greet you.
  • From Cumberland, MD, take I-68 West to Exit 15 (Coopers Rock Road). At top of exit ramp make a left, go over I-68 bridge and follow road into Coopers Rock State Forest.
    • Continue down for approximately 4 miles to the main parking lot area. All participants should meet at the “Overlook Trading Post”.   • All participants may park in either the regular parking area or the large overflow lot. No parking pass or validation is needed.

  • Time will be provided to review/complete paperwork and use the bathroom before programming begins.
  • Once paperwork has been complete and reviewed, an Adventure WV staff person will conduct a pre-hike orientation for the entire group.  This is the perfect time to ask questions and ensure you understand the activity entirely.
  • Various portions of Cooper’s Rock will be explored during these guided hikes. Difficulty of the terrain may vary due to weather or the natural landscape.
  • All gear is provided and no prior experience is necessary.

Hiking
Water Sports 
on Cheat Lake
  • From Morgantown, WV, take I-68 East to Exit 10 (Cheat Lake/Fairchance Rd.). After exiting, use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto WV-43 N 13. Take exit 1 toward Cheat Lake/Farichance Rd/State Rd 857 14. Turn left onto Bowers Ln 15. Turn left onto Fairchance Rd 16. Turn left onto Morgans Run Road. Travel approximately 2 miles. Parking lot and programming area will be on your left. 
  • From Cumberland, MD, take I-68 West to Exit 10 (Cheat Lake/Fairchance Rd.). After exiting, use the right lane to turn right onto WV-43 N 13. Take exit 1 toward Cheat Lake/Farichance Rd/State Rd 857 14. Turn left onto Bowers Ln 15. Turn left onto Fairchance Rd 16. Turn left onto Morgans Run Road. Travel approximately 2 miles. Parking lot and programming area will be on your left.

When you arrive at Cheat Lake Park at the end of Morgan Run Road, parking is provided in the lots on the left before the park entrance gate. There is also overflow parking in the lot uphill from the main parking area. For accessibility and patron drop-off, visitors may drive through the park entrance gate to the bottom of the hill to drop off individuals at the park's main trail entrance. Accessibility parking is provided at the bottom of the hill, as well.

  • Time will be provided to review/complete paperwork and use the bathroom before programming begins.
  • Once paperwork has been complete and reviewed, an Adventure WV staff person will conduct a pre-session orientation for the entire group. This is the perfect time to ask questions and ensure you understand the activity entirely.
  • Various portions of Cheat Lake will be explored.  Difficulty may vary due to weather or lake conditions.
  • All gear is provided and no prior experience is necessary.
