Course qualifies students for: Single Day Challenge Course Facilitator - Job Description Here

Course Description and Enrollment Instructions

Adventure WV in partnership with the WVU Davis College of Natural Resources and Design, is offering a 3 credit Challenge Course Facilitation course for Spring 2017 (RPTR 325). This class will cover the many aspects of challenge course facilitation – focusing primarily on education theory, experiential educational design and the technical abilities needed to operate a challenge course. Our goal is to introduce students to the fast growing field of challenge course facilitation – blending both educational theory and technical abilities.

This course is designed to train WVU students who plan to seek employment, obtain an internship or simply gain experience as a challenge course facilitator. Students successfully completing the course are qualified to take a certification exam offered by Alpine Towers (WVU’s Challenge Course contractor) – certifying them as a Level 1 facilitator through ACCT. This is a system specific certification that would be recognized at locations around the US, as well as a variety of local courses.

This class will utilize a blend of lecture and field based classes, allowing hands-on involvement. Two Saturday classes are required (dates TBD), providing the opportunity to learn new skills and abilities. Specifics skills pertaining to both dynamic and static systems will be covered. Prior experience with activities at height (rock climbing, challenge course etc) is helpful but not required. Participants must be willing to learn and practice in cold conditions, engage in hands on learning, work at height and enjoy a physical challenge!

Class meets Tuesdays 4:00pm to 6:50pm. During the first half of the semester, class will meet on campus (room 102 at the Student Rec Center). During the second part of the semester, class will meet at the Outdoor Education Center located at the University Research Forest near Coopers Rock. Transportation will be provided and will depart 30 mins prior to the start of class.

The optional certification exam will be held upon the completion of the spring semester. Students wishing to take the certification exam will need to commit and pay for the exam in advance.
